EA Giving Tuesday Instructions

Canada, donating $500 or more

Announcements

  • (2pm EST 2nd Dec) US Donors are no longer seeing the "Confirm Your Donation" dialog at donations $500 and up. This dialog still appears in Canada, but there is a chance Facebook might remove it from Canadian donors between the time of this announcement and the start of the match. We suggest Canadian donors trigger "Confirm Your Donation" dialog 1 second before the match time (second 59) to maximise the chances of getting matched.
  • Given the uncertainty about "Confirm Your Donation," we are now also recommending that all donation amounts be made in a single donation.

In a nutshell

  • Only Facebook donations to US non-profit organizations are eligible for matching, and non-profits that are registered in multiple countries (e.g. AMF) will be using their US branch to accept Giving Tuesday Facebook donations. Therefore you will probably lose tax benefits that you’d receive by donating to nonprofit organizations within Canada. Since it’s not guaranteed that your donations will be matched, the matching funds might not compensate for the loss in tax benefits.
  • Canadian donors may also want to consider the PayPal 10% match and retain their eligibility for tax deductions.
  • Last year the matching funds ran out in 15 seconds. We expect it to run out much faster this year. Try to click the final "Donate" button within the first second after the match start time of December 3rd, 2019, at 08:00:00am EST (05:00:00am PST).
  • Donation limits are larger when donations are made in US dollars. You are likely to be able to successfully donate up to $9,999 per donation.
  • We strongly recommend making a single donation, not multiple. You can try donating up to $9,999 (low risk of declines) or up to $19,999 (high risk of declines).
  • If you lose tax benefits by donating on Facebook, then do not retry any declined donations. The match has probably already ended.
  • Each donor is eligible for up to $20,000 USD in matched donations.

On Giving Tuesday

Important

  1. The match begins on December 3rd, 2019, at 08:00:00am EST (05:00:00am PST). To see this in your time zone, click here.
  2. Be prepared to be ready and alert at least 20 minutes before the match start time.
  3. Open a web browser tab of the appropriate fundraiser for each donation you need to make.
  4. Open time.is/just (an accurate clock) in a new window and place it next to your fundraiser window so you can view both together. (see image below)
  5. Click the green “Donate” button as soon as you see the clock change to ONE SECOND (second 59) before the match start time.
  6. It's likely you will then need to quickly click on an additional gray "Donate" button on a "Confirm Your Donation" that pops up.
  7. If you lose tax benefits by donating on Facebook, then do not retry any declined donations. The match has probably already ended.
